Frequently asked questions
Mac: “Apple could not verify …”, what now?
The Mac version is not notarized by Apple yet, that is coming soon. Until then, once: open the downloaded file, drag SystemTrayMenu to “Applications” and double-click it there, close the message with “Done”, not “Move to Trash”. Then System Settings → Privacy & Security, at the bottom next to “SystemTrayMenu” click “Open Anyway” and confirm with your password or Touch ID. From then on it starts normally. Without any warning: open Terminal (Applications → Utilities), paste curl -fsSL https://hofknecht.eu/install/stm-mac | bash and press Return; the line downloads the newest version, checks it and installs it to ~/Applications. The steps are also in LIESMICH.txt in the ZIP.
Mac: can I use Homebrew?
Yes, in Terminal: brew install --cask hofknecht/tap/systemtraymenu. Allow the first start once with “Open Anyway” as in the question above; after that the app fetches updates itself.
How do I enter the license?
Save the .lic file from the thank-you page or the mail to your Downloads folder, the program picks it up at start. Or paste it under Settings, “License”.
New computer or bought elsewhere?
Download here and enter the license, it works on all your computers, also a license from itch.io. Bought in the Microsoft Store: install it there, the store keeps it up to date, no license needed. Resend the license goes to the email address of the purchase.
What happens after the 14 trial days?
Only the main menu opens and submenus show a notice until you enter a license. The remaining days are shown under Settings → About.
Does the app need internet or an account?
No. The license is checked offline, without an account or activation. Only with “Update automatically” does the app ask hofknecht.eu for new versions.
How do new versions arrive?
By themselves (can be switched off): the app downloads new versions, checks their signature and swaps itself once the menu is closed. What every update brings: What’s new in SystemTrayMenu.
Can I withdraw from the purchase?
Yes, within 14 days without giving a reason, you get your money back: withdraw from contract. Details in the terms.
What happens to version 1?
Version 1 for Windows stays free. Bought it in the Microsoft Store? You'll get version 3 there as an update at no extra cost. Version 3 is rewritten, also runs on macOS and Linux and needs less memory.
Setup, everyday use and every setting are explained in the help. For Windows 11: taskbar toolbars, Quick Launch, pin a folder to the taskbar. For Mac: add a folder to the Dock. For Ubuntu: pin a folder to the dock. For journalists: press kit.
System requirements
Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit · macOS on Apple silicon (M1 or later) · Linux 64-bit with X11 (Wayland limited) · about 20 MB of memory, no extra software
Privacy
By default nothing leaves your computer. Only with “Send error reports” does a short report go to the developer after a crash, without user names, folder contents or settings. For website icons STM asks the website itself, if need be DuckDuckGo or Google, sending only the domain name. Only the trial asks hofknecht.eu once when its trial began, sending just a device key that can’t be traced back, never with a license. Details, also for this website, are in the privacy policy.
